Osun student electrocuted with plugged phone

A 100-level student of University of Ilesa, Osun State, Gbolahan Ojolo, has reportedly died of electrocution triggered by lightning strike in his hall of residence in Ilesa, the Nation reports. Ojolo, a student in the Department of Business Administration, was said to be charging his phone and playing a game on it at the same time when thunder struck. Confirming the incident in a statement on Saturday, the Registrar of the University, Funso Ojo, said the incident happened on Friday. Ojo’s statement partly read, “The Management of the University of Ilesa, Osun State, deeply regrets to announce the tragic and untimely death of one of its students, Gbolahan Ojolo, a 100 Level student of the Department of Business Administration. “The unfortunate incident occurred in the evening of Friday, April 18, 2025. NSCDC deploys 2,350 personnel

As Muslims faithful prepare for the Eid-el-kabir celebration, the Osun State Police command has tighten security measures to ensure a hitch-free festival across the State.

The State Police Commissioner, Muhammed Umar in a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola charged Area commanders, Divisional Police Officers to ensure adequate deployment of personnel towards a hitch-free celebration.

He urges them to ensure extensive deployment of policemen as well as all necessary logistics to strategic points along the highway, worship centres and all nooks and crannies of the state.

“As heads of formations, you should personally supervise your personnel deployed for this special assignment and warn them not to infringe on the rights of citizens but to protect them towards untold incidence. They are to ensure a 24/7-hourly surveillance of their respective area of operations.

“Members of the public should report any suspicious movement by giving prompt and useful information to the Police in case of any infraction of the law through the following numbers 08039537995 and 08067788119”, he said.

Also, the Osun Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corp has deployed 2,350 personnel to various areas in the state to provide adequate security during the festival.

The command in a statement by its public relations officer, Kehinde Adeleke, assured residents of adequate security before, during and after the festival.

The commandant, Michael Adaralewa stated, “Osun State is going to witness an influx of people, we have deployed massively to strategic locations and we have identified some blackspots, the deployment covers both overt and covert operations in the state.

“The team comprised of Special Armed squad, Female Armed Squad, Anti-Kidnapping, Anti-Cultism, Chemical Biological Radiological and Nuclear Explosive unit, Special Weapon and Tactical team, Counter Terrorism and Disaster Management.

“The deployment covers public places, such as markets, praying grounds, recreational centres, motor parks, shopping malls among others. while stressing that protection of Critical National Asssets and Infrastructure is very sacrosanct”.
