Osun student electrocuted with plugged phone

A 100-level student of University of Ilesa, Osun State, Gbolahan Ojolo, has reportedly died of electrocution triggered by lightning strike in his hall of residence in Ilesa, the Nation reports. Ojolo, a student in the Department of Business Administration, was said to be charging his phone and playing a game on it at the same time when thunder struck. Confirming the incident in a statement on Saturday, the Registrar of the University, Funso Ojo, said the incident happened on Friday. Ojo’s statement partly read, “The Management of the University of Ilesa, Osun State, deeply regrets to announce the tragic and untimely death of one of its students, Gbolahan Ojolo, a 100 Level student of the Department of Business Administration. “The unfortunate incident occurred in the evening of Friday, April 18, 2025. Prof. Oloyede, Adeleye Others Bag Osun NIPR Award of Excellence






Foremost Professor of Journalism and Mass Communication, Prof. Bayo Oloyede, and Mr. Adetunji Adeleye, Deputy Director of Information, Redeemer's University, have bagged the Nigeria Institute of Public Relations Award of Excellence for their outstanding contributions to Osun State NIPR.

The award presentation was held on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at the Conference Hall of Leisure Spring Hotel and Suite, Osogbo.

Prof. Bayo Oloyede was honoured as a recipient of the prestigious Pillar of Public Relations Award while Mr. Adetunji Adeleye, the Public Relations Officer of Redeemer's University, was awarded as the Best in Public Relations Education (for Practicing Public Relations Professionals who train others in the industry).

In his address, the Chairman of Osun State NIPR, Comrade Ademola Adesoji, noted that Prof. Oloyede was recognised for his outstanding contributions to the field of public relations and also for his dedication to sharing knowledge and his wealth of experience towards advancing the profession in Nigeria. He lauded Prof. Oloyede for his immense role in mentoring and shaping both practitioners and public relations scholars.

According to Adesoji, the award was a testament to Prof. Oloyede’s exemplary leadership style, scholarly excellence, and unwavering commitment to excellence in public relations education and practice in Nigeria.

Adesoji emphasised that the Osun NIPR Awards is aimed at celebrating individuals who have made significant contributions to the profession and that the awardees were carefully chosen after due diligence was conducted.

Also awarded were the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi; the Punch newspaper correspondent in Osun, Mr. Boladale Bamgbola; Adeleke University, Dr. Rasheed Adebiyi, lecturer; Fountain University, Mr. Abiodun Olarewaju, Public Relations Officer; Obafemi Awolowo University, among others.

Among those present were the Vice Chancellor, Redeemer's University, Prof. Shadrach Akindele; Vice Chancellor, Adeleke University, Prof. Adebola Amos Ajayi; Representative of the National Chairman NIPR, Prince Dr. Adewale Oyekanmi; Representative of Aragbiji of Iragbiji, Dr. Olorede; and other eminent personalities present at the occasion.
