Six die, one injured in Ibadan road accident

Six persons have reportedly lost their lives, while one was injured in separate road crashes in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, on Thursday and Friday, respectively.

According to Punch, the first road accident occurred at midnight on Thursday at Idi-Ose Bus Stop on the new Ibadan/Oyo expressway in the Akinyele Local Government Area of the state, in which one person died.

Another accident occurred at midnight on Friday, at the front of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited Filling Station on Ojoo/Iwo-Road, in the Ibadan North East Local Government Area, which claimed five people.

Eyewitnesses told our correspondent that the victim of Thursday’s accident was a motor boy who sat at the back of the trailer with cows, and suddenly, the trailer veered off the road, which led to his death.

The source said, “The trailer was coming from the Northern part of the country alongside the victim. The victim sat at the back of the trailer with cows. He had already slept off when the trailer veered off the road. So, he hit his head on the ground, which led to his demise.”

On Friday, the accident reportedly involved a commercial Nissan Micra car carrying five passengers, which collided with a long truck.

One of the sources said, “The identities of the driver of the car and the passengers are yet to be known.

“Their dead bodies were evacuated by the government relevant agencies that midnight and taken to an undisclosed morgue within the Ibadan metropolis.”

Another source said, “The incident occurred around 12 midnight directly opposite the NNPCL Filling Station, General Gas area.”

When contacted, the state Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission, Rosemary Alo, confirmed both accidents and the number of casualties to our correspondent in Ibadan.

She disclosed that 12 people were involved in the accident at the NNPCL area, adding that “five people died, one injured and six escaped unhurt.

Alo said, “One person died on Thursday at Idi-Ose, while five people died, and one person sustained an injury at the General Gas area opposite the NNPCL filling station. Six others escaped unhurt.”

The state sector commander added that police had taken the injured victim to Metrol Hospital before the arrival of road safety personnel, adding that the accident vehicle had been towed to Akobo Police Station, Ibadan. She, therefore, admonished motorists to avoid route violations.
