NLC, TUC Paralyze Activities in Oyo Govt Institutions

Government institutions, schools, hospitals, banks, and other establishments were brought to a halt on Monday as the Oyo State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) joined the ongoing national strike to demand a new minimum wage.

At the federal secretariat, the entrance was locked and workers were unable to access the premises.

The strike also impacted local businesses, with owners reporting low patronage due to the effects of the strike.

Also, the entrance (2nd gate) of UCH was totally shut down but the main entrance (1st gate) was partially opened for patients who need emergency attention.

Some wards visited at the hospital were also partially deserted as few health workers were seen attending to patients.

At Adeoyo State Hospital, the hospital was also deserted but few health workers were seen attending to patients who needed emergency attention.

Other institutions visited include The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Oyo State Secretariat and NISER among others.

Meanwhile, the TUC chairman in Oyo state, Com. Bosun Olabiyi in an interview said organised labour will not ask for any minimum wage again if the government can work on their request and have something better than what they had in 2019.

He said as politicians work in the current economic reality, workers also must work with the current reality.

“They have told us that they are working and reengineering the economy, the life of workers must also be in line with the current reality that is why we are out to fight for our rights.”

He however urged workers to stay at home so that their request on the new minimum wage can be met, saying further directives by the leadership of the union will be communicated to them in earnest
