Osun student electrocuted with plugged phone

A 100-level student of University of Ilesa, Osun State, Gbolahan Ojolo, has reportedly died of electrocution triggered by lightning strike in his hall of residence in Ilesa, the Nation reports. Ojolo, a student in the Department of Business Administration, was said to be charging his phone and playing a game on it at the same time when thunder struck. Confirming the incident in a statement on Saturday, the Registrar of the University, Funso Ojo, said the incident happened on Friday. Ojo’s statement partly read, “The Management of the University of Ilesa, Osun State, deeply regrets to announce the tragic and untimely death of one of its students, Gbolahan Ojolo, a 100 Level student of the Department of Business Administration. “The unfortunate incident occurred in the evening of Friday, April 18, 2025. Police launch investigation into killing of unidentified person in Osun town

 


The Osun State Police Command has commenced investigations into the circumstances which led to the killing of an unidentified person in Iwo town.

The Command also confirmed the arrest of one person in connection with the incident.

A statement released on Tuesday by the Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Umar Abba, and signed by the spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola, noted that the police regretted that the death came after repeated warnings to members of the public, especially hunters and other local security outfits on the use of firearms.

The statement reads, “The Osun State Police Command is miffed with the report/news of the shooting/killing of a man in Iwo despite continuous warnings/sensitization of members of the public especially hunters and other local security outfits on the use of guns (firearms).

“The Command is using this medium to appeal to members of the public especially the family of the deceased and residents of Iwo to remain calm and not to take law into their hands as the Command has set up a team of crack detectives to investigate the circumstances that led to the shooting/killing of the man in the town.

“Meanwhile, the suspect has since been identified, arrested and presently in the police custody.”

The Command also cautioned members of the public on the need to exercise caution and abide by the rules governing the use of firearms at all times.
