Osun student electrocuted with plugged phone

A 100-level student of University of Ilesa, Osun State, Gbolahan Ojolo, has reportedly died of electrocution triggered by lightning strike in his hall of residence in Ilesa, the Nation reports. Ojolo, a student in the Department of Business Administration, was said to be charging his phone and playing a game on it at the same time when thunder struck. Confirming the incident in a statement on Saturday, the Registrar of the University, Funso Ojo, said the incident happened on Friday. Ojo’s statement partly read, “The Management of the University of Ilesa, Osun State, deeply regrets to announce the tragic and untimely death of one of its students, Gbolahan Ojolo, a 100 Level student of the Department of Business Administration. “The unfortunate incident occurred in the evening of Friday, April 18, 2025. You Have Been Equipped for positive change, Redeemer's University VC Tells Graduating Students



The graduating students of Redeemer's University have been advised to go into the world and become agents of positive societal change. 

Vice Chancellor of the Redeemer's University, Prof. Anthony Enisan Akinlo gave this advice during the pre-convocation Press briefing held at the Senate Chambers of the university.

Speaking at the pre convocation Press briefing, the Vice Chancellor of the Redeemer's University noted that beyond the intellectual grooming that the students have been exposed to, they have also been spiritually fortified against all forms of evils, " To our dear graduating students, note that beyond the intellectual grooming that we have provided, the Almighty God has given you necessary spiritual protection to dominate. You are secured from all evils of the world because you belong to Him. 

"I enjoin you to go into the world, display your God-given potentials and dominate but with absolute fear of God."

Prof. Akinlo said the university will be graduating 750 students tagged the "Dominion set" during the convocation ceremony on Thursday, September 7th, 2023. According to him, the faculty of Basic Medical Science will be graduating 116 students, the faculty of Humanities 174, the faculty of Law 73, Management sciences 119, natural Sciences 120 and the faculty of Social Sciences 148. The Vice-Chancellor noted that since the inception of the university, 6,995 students have graduated from the university.

On the achievements of the University, the Vice Chancellor emphasized that academic programmes have expanded from 26 to 54 programmes while 32 programmes have been successfully accredited with 27 programmes receiving full accreditation status while five received interim. He also said the university is regularly promoting qualified members of staff, acquiring books and journals worth several millions of Naira and also attracting foreign students to the university among others.

Professor Akinlo also stated that the African Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases (ACEGID) in the University is training every master’s and PhD student in Sciences for excellence, “I can tell you in a very simple way that the centre has attracted grants of not less than $200 million. Many grants are still coming virtually every day. ”

“We have many new programmes, among which is the Centre for Gender and Humanitarian Studies; this centre will be the first in Nigeria.”

Activities marking the 15 convocation ceremony commenced last week Thursday and Friday at the Redemption City of God where prayers and anointing service were conducted for the graduating students.
