SUBSIDY PROTESTS: NLC BEGINS PROTESTS IN ABUJA, LAGOS

Members and officials of the Nigeria Labour Congress, and representatives of civil society groups alongside concerned citizens are currently protesting in Abuja and many Nigerian cities in a bid to express their displeasure on subsidy removal and the hike in fuel price by the government.

In Abuja, reports say the unionists who had in their hands placards with various inscriptions such as #BringBackOurRefineries; #LetThePoorBreathe; #ALUTACONTINUA have blocked the roads leading to the Federal High Court, Transcorp Hotel; Federal Secretariat Phase 1 among others.

President of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Joe Ajaero, on Wednesday in an interview with reporters at Unity Fountain, Abuja, where workers gathered to hit the streets said the protests have started and that the union has mobilized its members across the nation.

“Protests have taken off in all states bearing some hindrances in some places. We are aware of the Police efforts to stop the process in some areas.

“To be candid with you, nothing is stopping the protest. Based on responses from state governments, it is equally our determination whether the protest will be for today, tomorrow, or next, not by using force to stop the people from expressing their views. We are here for the protest, to make a statement to Nigerians”, he stated.
